Nest Protect
Smoke alarms are undoubtedly one of the most important appliances you can buy for a safe household, but for a long time they’ve remained somewhat dull grey boxes rarely given a second thought except when its time to change the battery. The Nest Protect Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm challenges this status quo by introducing a range of handy new features and makes its way onto the home automation scene in the process.
The Nest Protect comes equipped with an array of sensors, including a photoelectric sensor for the detection of smoke particles, a carbon monoxide sensor that can detect toxic levels of this invisible killer, and a heat sensor to detect a rise in room temperature.
In addition, the device has an occupancy sensor which can detect when someone is moving under it and illuminate its Pathlight LED lamp during hours of darkness – helping to make those undead stumbles to the bathroom a little less hazardous.
Perhaps most conveniently, if you’re experiencing a mishap with a toaster or frying pan, the device will provide a Heads-Up warning in a human voice alerting you to the presence of smoke before activating a full-blown alarm.
The device can be connected to a Wi-Fi network and has an accompanying smartphone app (iOS and Android), which provides the ability to monitor the status of the alarm, assign room names to multiple Nest Protects and configure device features.
Put all of these features together and you have one seriously capable and connected home safety appliance, which also looks far more handsome than a smoke alarm should. And yes Mr Wayne, it does come in black.
